50 Years of Freedom of Expression

In 1997, the RPG Academy of Art organized a grand event called “Fifty Years of Freedom of Expression” in Mumbai. The show, held to commemorate the 50th year of the India’s Independence, had 56 artists and sculptors expressing their meaning of this momentous occasion.

The fascinating aspect of the exhibition was the mix of artists who have had first-hand experience of the pre-1947 era, and those who were born after independence. Each canvas reflected the joy and anguish of a country forever at the crossroads of high hope and despair.
